Asian bird fair in Davao
MANILA, Philippines – Bird watchers, conservationists, and international eco-tourists have their eyes on the Philippines, host of Asia?s first region-wide bird festival this month.
The first Asian Bird Fair will be held at the Waterfront Insular Hotel in Davao City September 24 to 26 in tandem with the 6th Philippine Bird Festival, the country?s premier avian conservation and eco-tourism event. The milestone event is co-hosted by the Philippine Eagle Foundation and the Davao City government.
Wild Bird Club of the Philippines president Mike Lu said the theme this year is ?Nurture Nature, Save our Future,? an initiative shared by the Bird Conservation Society of Thailand, Chinese Wild Bird Federation, Wild Bird Society of Taipei, Malaysian Nature Society, and Nature Society (Singapore).
The Asian Bird Fair, which highlights bird festivals of the participating countries, seeks to enrich eco-tourism through bird-watching and promotes the natural and cultural heritage of host cities, Lu said.
Activities include a forum, tours of the Philippine Eagle Center and Eden Garden Resorts, photo exhibits, and presentations. There will be fun activities like a guided tour at low tide of the tidal flats in front of the Waterfront Insular Hotel where participants can have a closer look at marine species like fiddler crabs and mudskippers, as well as enjoy spectacular views of herons, egrets, and shorebirds.
Alice Villa-Real, chair of the organizing committee, said the event will help draw attention to pressing conservation issues.
?We can protect the rich bird life and their habitat while promoting responsible enjoyment of nature and encouraging related sustainable businesses in the local communities,? she said.
